The feel of the unyielding length of wood and moss is but a momentary comfort to Roswald in the face of his ranged assailants. His wounds ache, still having not yet removed the offending projectiles from his body for fear of falling prey to rapid blood loss. His breath's come unsteadily to him, his mind racing in ponderance of what action he should undertake next. He could attempt to make a dash from his current position towards the closest of the filthy little bastards... but it would likely end badly, he thought grimly to himself. All the while he was considering his options, he was sure those malicious cretins were attempting to maneuver themselves at better vantage points with which to badger him further with bow fire.

The option of creating some sort of distraction enters the young messenger's mind, but with what, he wonders? No sooner does the question enter his mind than the answer comes to him in the form of his peaked fur cap sliding precariously forward over his eyes. Roswald silently curses himself, knowing that there's no other way, removing his hat with some reverence and quietly praying for his family's forgiveness for what he was about to do next.

Roswald throws his hat into the air and two arrows fly at it, one missing and one hitting it. That is the moment Roswald has been waiting for and he jumps out and with an ancient battle cry charges the two surprised goblins!

His sword flashes out and stabs deep into the goblin's body, running him through, then pulling out his blade and beheading him in one swift strike.

The other goblin shakes with fear now, but for some reason does not run. He throws down his bow and pulls out a metal axe and his shield, ready to face Roswald!

As though gripped by the very essence of Sigmar's hatred for the craven greenskins upon witnessing the defilement of his cherished childhood memory, Roswald throws caution to the wind. Blade and knife in hand, the enraged messenger vaults over the fallen tree, letting out a battlecry that seemed utterly unfamiliar, yet oddly galvanizing in its effect to his psyche.

The goblin before him could hardly react to this sudden burst of activity before receiving a barrage of perforations across its emaciated torso from the messenger's knife, not even given the chance to squeal out in utter pain and horror as Roswald's shortsword flashes out from the left, and in one brutal stroke relieving the foul creature's head from its now lifeless carcass in a shower of blood.

The remaining goblin's eyes betray its sheer terror at watching its erstwhile comrade slaughtered so brutally, and yet, strangely, whether out of stupidity, fear of some far more gruesome fate, or perhaps even an extremely rare show of courage, it stands its ground. Contemptously discarding its bow and arrows, its spidery hands reach simultaneously towards the wooden shield strapped on its back and the metal axe strapped at its side, its leering visage showing a willingness to do battle.

Roswald is more than willing to oblige his remaining opponent's wishes, issuing out a grating metallic rasp from the raking of his knife along the edge of his sword as way of challenge.

Roswald readies for the Goblin's attack, but the crazed creature's blow goes wide. Then he counterattacks, but his thrust also misses.

Soon enough blows and thrusts are exchanged between Roswald and the greenskin, yet neither's efforts seem to pay off in the shedding of blood. A murderous arc proscribed by the goblin's axe goes wide, while a measured thrust from the messenger is just barely evaded. Retracting himself from the fray for but a moment, this time measuring his foe up for but a split second before sallying forth once more in mortal combat once more.

Roswald aims his blade and when the goblin lowers his shield a bit, he strikes quick as a serpent. Hitting the goblin's neck, he opens a significant wound, but screaming furiously and not yet hindered by blood loss, the goblin counterattacks. Roswald ducks and the axe strikes a tree, sticking in the thick wood. The goblin tries to yank it out but cannot, and so he drops his shield, mumbling curses under his breath, he puts his two legs against the tree and holds on to the axe in the wood with both hands, unsuccessfully trying to pull it free.

Blows are traded again, but with more definitive results, Roswald notes with some amount of satisfaction, his shortsword deftly slipping past the greenskins defenses and perforating the miserable creature's throat, but much to his surprise, gripped as though in some berserker fury, it pressed on. Yet such fury usually comes with recklessness, as proven quite clearly as it wildly swings its axe in the hopes of scoring a similarly devastating blow, only for it to miss its intended target with a well timed duck, the unwieldy bladed end of the crude axe burying itself quite securely in the trunk of a nearby tree.

In its foolishness and desperation it tries to wrench its axe free as quickly as possible, even going so far as dropping its greatest, if not only, means of defense against a lethal reprisal in its frantic attempts. Roswald needs no further encouragement, already readying for what he hopes will be the final blow.

Roswald will show no mercy to this creature of chaos, and as the goblin tries to pull his axe free from the tree, he stabs his shortsword into his foe's back. The goblin slumps to the ground, bleeding heavily, twitches once or twice and then lies still. The forest is silent, as if anticipating more violence to come. The moon shines through the trees.

And just like that, Roswald finds that the battle for survival is over, his blades forever snuffing the life of his greenskin assailant in short order. Retracting his blades from the twitching corpse, the messenger takes a moment to breath deeply as a rush of immense satisfaction briefly consumed his entire being, the dull throbs of pain all but forgotten for the tiniest of moments. This had been the first time he had ever dealt with such a threat single handedly, and although he had been badly wounded in the process, he had prevailed, and that's all that mattered.

Still, the dull throbs of pain issuing from his wounds interrupted his reverie, reminding him that despite the immediate danger having passed, he was still in extremely dangerous territory, and prolonging his stay only decreased his chances ever further. Wiping his blades clean of goblin blood on the tattered skin and cloth of the greenskin corpses and retrieving his perforated hat (removing the arrow before plopping it glumly back on top of his head), Roswald immediately sets about his makeshift camp, gathering all of his belongings.

Satisfied that everything has been settled, he shuffles slowly over to his horse, who judging from its strained musculature and jittery movements was clearly more than ready to bolt if it had not been tethered beforehand.

The messenger takes a deep breath to try and let the heat of the battle pass. Then he gathers his trappings and walks to the horse.
Roswald calms down his horse, speaking soft words into its ears. It relaxes a bit and lets him mount.
It is still night, and slowly, the eerie sounds of the nightly forest return as an owl hoots and a wild cat moves in to inspect one of the dead goblins, only to shrink back in fear of the unusual smell.
