Ryoko looks up from where he kneels, choosing his words carefully. He thinks only for a moment and begins, confidence in his voice, as it echoes his true feelings. With a deep bow to the ground he begins, "Ever powerful and Son of the Heavans, this is my Honor.", the Lion runs his callused hand across the daikyu with a reverence few have witnessed, "The Fujiwara are a small family, as much famers as bushi. But our will is strong." Ryoko's eyes brightly shine yellow in the light of the court's lamps, "Our time is divided between the production of rice for all those who would serve the Empire, and protecting what is ours. In the forests and fields of our home, a sword would go unused, neglected. Insulting those who would forge grace from steel, such as Hattori Hanzo-sama, could not be condoned by my family." He nods deeply to Shimazu, further acknowledging the man's Honor, "A more utilitarian approach was made, as we lack weaponsmiths to forge swords. The bow was adopted, both as tool and as weapon."
He waits a moment, for the Hantei to digest his words and then continues, "The jitte was my mother's, one of the finest samurai-ko my family has ever been graced with." He smiles and bows to the floor again, waiting to see if the Hantei desires further explanation.

The Son of Heaven listens to the explaination, a similar tale will be told 500 years from now by the Tsuruchi, who also will abandon the daisho in favor of the bow. The Emperor nods, "The Fujiwara Family sounds very practical in their approach to life but not very traditional. I am surprised the Lion would accept such untraditional concepts of honor." A ripple through time as the Emperor acknowledges a family that does not exsist. Ryoko can't help be feel some what shamed at blatantly lying to the Emperor about the Fujiwara, but some of what he speaks is true, his mother, her jitte, and he steels his feelings on those facts. "I am pleased to see the Lion and the Crane working together, yet I am saddened to see noble samurai, like you, live without a blade." He looks at Shimazu, "Hattori-san, will you and your family pledge to supply the Fujiwara with suitable blades for their use, and to bare them respect due a samurai even if those blade sit silent for a time while they tend to theie Duty?"
The pieces are moving on he Go board, and a request from the Hantei, even this young one, is more than a request...

Shimazu nods his head, "I would," he says, "But, I hate to say, we have no great blacksmiths left, though, I believe we could definitely find blacksmiths suitable to arm Ryoko-san." He wonders why the Emperor keeps asking him the same types of questions over and over, when he has clearly stated there are no more blacksmiths in his family earlier when speaking of the wakizashi.

The Emperor knows better, a Crane family, even a Vassal, will have access to the wealth of the Crane. It is strange perhaps, but the young Hantei knows what he is doing, bleeding away resources from one of the Gozoku Clans. "Excellent, then the Crane Swordsmiths, under your leadership will see to it that this young Lion has himself a suitable blade, worthy of the Hattori and the Fujiwara. I shall handle the rest of the details..." he motions at an Otomo scribe nearby who starts to scribble down some information.
This treaty, or trade agreement that Shimazu has walked into, even as simple as it is, changes things again. The Crane will be bound by Imperial treaty, that even they can't get out of, to supply a small amount of their swords to the Lion. These are the same swords that will be made using the Honzo sword as an example. The blades will reach the Lion and be put into the hands as fate would have it to the ancestors of Ryoko. Over the generations the blades will work their way up through history, often clashing with the Crane's own blades as the two Clans war with one another off and on throughout Rokugan history. This balance helps to counter some of the effects of Shimazu's previous misstep, and in many critical duels between Lion and Crane, the Lion will not be outmatch with weaponry. The blades of the Hattori come into the hands of Ryoko's mother...
Ryoko can feel his history changing, twisting, he remembers the new history, but the old one as well....
[ Ryoko's History Change ] ![Show/hide content [x]](themes/cpgnuke/images/plus.gif)
(This is Ryoko's altered history, based on the story that jigglypuff69 wrote)
I hail from the Phoenix lands... a village near the border shared with the Lion, simply called Black Stone Village was once my home. Well, 6 months ago it was home. Now it’s just place where the land holds my childhood, waiting patiently for my return. Where the earth once spilled forth the Empire’s sustenance.
People in my village spoke of the day my mother, Arisa, arrived. A statuesque, golden haired woman with a fierce beauty that froze men in their tracks. And lit the fire of lust in their hearts. Many went to great lengths to win this strange woman’s heart and all failed. In the end, it was a simple farmer named Tesuo that she chose as her husband. His quiet ways and gentle touch seemed to quell a bit of the ever present fury in her breast. To all they seemed to be the perfect opposites... but you know what they say of opposites.
7 months after Arisa had appeared in our village, I was born. Both my parents exclaimed that my golden eyes were a blessing from the Fortunes and a celebration ensued. During the celebration, a small group of village wives were discussing, a little too loudly, the possibilities of my parentage. Unfortunately for the women, Arisa overheard this. Several broken bones later, my mother made the point that it was none of their concern. They all agreed.
I grew up having two teachers. My father, with his infinite patience, would show me the way of the land. Seasons would pass by, each with their own secrets. He would describe each with an awe of wonder, helping me unravel the puzzles set before me by the earth. He could make anything grow... My mother crafted her own bow, then taught me to make my own. She would take me hunting with her, showing me how to stalk our quarry and pounce at the right moment. Always during the hunt, my mother eyes would smolder with excitement as she displayed her wicked grin. This all was to come to an abrupt end in the winter of my 9th year.
My father, the strongest man I ever knew, took ill one night. He fought the fevers that wracked his body like a samurai possessed. In the end, the Fortune’s took him from my mother and I. Ebisu watch over him... That night, in the dead of Winter, my mother washed Tesuo’s body, we built a funeral pyre, and then emblazoned the night sky in my father’s honor. That night, in the dead of Winter, something in my mother died...
With the calming effect of my father gone, Arisa became something else entirely. Something feral. We both did the farming in the patties, but she took to working as a doshin for the village yoriki. The few times I followed her into the village and saw the ease with which she subdued disorderly villagers and ronin alike scared me. Who was this woman? The day that I asked where she had learned to fight was the day my relationship with my mother changed forever. Never again was I called her son, but was referred to as her doshi. The next 6 years were to teach me the meaning of that word.
My mother began my training the next day. Harsh would be a kind word to describe the rigors. For months, the weight of field work and training with Arisa threatened to break me, but she was always there, teaching me to push myself to take that one last step. I was taught to use a bow to hunt men, fight with my hands and feet, to crush the will of an opponent before his body... I was becoming something that made my mother beam with pride. Gone was the love in her eyes, replaced by a kind of pride. The kind of pride that a horse breeder shows when displaying his best stallion. I realized, much later, that it was Arisa’s way to protect me from the world.
One day a group of ronin had made their way to Black Stone Village, thinking they may have found easy pickings. They had no way of knowing that Jigoku was waiting for them on that particular day. My mother was to teach them. Our neighbor’s house lay close enough to ours that my mother was first to hear the screams. The screams of a woman in pain. The scream of a woman meeting her ancestors. Arisa, for some reason that only the Kami know, raced to her bed room and produced a weapon I had never seen, an exquisite katana. With sword in hand she ran as fast as she could to the women's dwelling. As fast as I was, she was still faster. I arrived in time to see a vision laid before me, like that of a nightmare. Our neighbors lay in the street, dead or dying.
Four laughing ronin were exiting their house with what little belongings our friends had worked a lifetime to earn. A yell exploded from my mother’s throat, animalistic and terrible as she tore into the ronin. Time slowed as I ran towards her and the fray. Somehow, Arisa had disarmed one of ronin with her blade and used the weapon to remind him of what his insides looked like. The three remaining ronin fought as they never had before, keeping this lioness at bay. Blood soon ran freely from the bodies of all involved, with the upper hand soon going to my mother. The other ronin continued to fall, first one and then a second, until there was a lone man left. Even though she laughed with bloodthirsty abandon throughout the battle, her wounds were starting to slow Arisa. This is what the last man had been waiting for. In a flash, his yari darted forward, but with a single stroke Arisa cleft the yari shaft in two deflecting the blow with her razor sharp blade. The look of shock in his face lasted only a second. Raising the katana, she brought it down onto this one’s head with a sickening thud, the force of which snapped the blade in two. As I reached my mother and watched the ronin’s body slide to the ground, she lifted the broken blade from the group with reverance. I remember her smiling. Not the wicked grin I was used to, but for the first time a smile filled with joy and surrender. Her eyes once more held the love that I thought was lost to me for a moment while she mouthed the word son...
"It is done," she said, "The Kasuga assassins have played their hand, and have lost. It is time we leave this village, and it is time for you son, to learn your heritage..." From that point on things would change. We would leave Black Stone Village and return to the Lion lands where my mother, Matsu Arisa was welcomed back from her Musha Shugyo with open arms. I would begin my formal Lion training and learn my history and my place as a Lion Samurai. It was one of the proudest days of my life, but the Lion are warriors and peace rarely lives hand in hand with them.
There is more, but JP and I have to speak privately.
Ryoko standing there in the court of the Hantei takes on a change, his features seem to age, to grow stronger and to become more noble. His innocence fades as the heart of a Lion takes hold in his chest. Back in the estate where you are housed, Ryoko's ashigaru armor shimmers and shifts and becomes a set of light samurai armor, finely polished and cleaned, the Lion Mon displayed on it. Set on a wrack next to the armor, placed there reverantly is a daisho, Ryoko's daisho, in place of his tonfa. The Lion Samurai that Ryoko always could have been, he now is!
[ OOC ] ![Show/hide content [x]](themes/cpgnuke/images/plus.gif) We have alot of changes here. JP and I will want to talk a bit but...
Ryoko's Armor is now Fine Light Armor
Ryoko's Tonfa are gone, no Lion Samurai would use these.
Ryoko's Staff Skill is gone, with no Tonfa, no skill.
Ryoko's Kenjutsu will replace his Staff skill: Gain Kenjutsu Rank 3
Ryoko's Daisho...Two blades
The Katana is an Exceptional Hattori Blade, however it remains broken. This was his mother's blade, given to him by his mother upon his Gempukku. You gain the Disadvantage: Broken Daisho for no points.
The Wakizashi is your own blade made for you from Lion smiths when you graduated from your dojo. It is an average quality Wakizashi.
Honor raises to a 3
Glory raises to a 2.5 (Remains a 5 in this timeline)
Status raises to a 2
You have 2 ranks of Ronin Warrior, these remains, but you are Rank 3 character. You have learned 1 Rank of a Lion school and we need to talk about which one you have now, please start looking.

Ryoko looks up towards the Emeral Throne, his yellow eyes hardened by years of Lion training, the smooth face of youth replaced by the slightly harder edges of battle. "Arigato gosaimasu, Son of the Heavens. Your words hold as much wisdom as all the water of the seas. My family, my Clan are forever in the debt of you and the Throne. May the Hantei line live forever and know Strength and Honor til the end of all times." Fujiwara Ryoko bows deeply, forehead touching the tatami mats. When her raises after some time, it is as a changed man. The ghost remains, but the blood has changed...

The Hantei nods back to Matsu Ryoko, "It is I who thank you Lion-san." The Emperor then claps his hands. "Let the feast begin!"
There is a sudden flurry of motion as all the doors of the chamber are thrown open. Shimazu and Ryoko tense, the first thing that crosses their minds is Ambush!, but they quickly learn that its just a flood of servants. Dozens of hemin swoop into the room with trays of food, with low tables to kneel at, with ptichers of drink, and all the things you need for a grand banquet. In a matter of moments everyone is seated around a table, the table is loaded with great smelling food, and the party is on. The Emperor is at the head of the table, still on his dais, not having moved himself, and the guests of honor at at his left and right side down the table. The young man holds up a pair of ivory chopsticks, "Perhaps Oniji-san the Little Brother would care to offer the blessing before we enjoy the fair the kami have given us?" He looks to Oniji for the meal time prayer, and all the courtiers and ambassadors are poised to eat, waiting only on Oniji to speak...

[ OOC ] ![Show/hide content [x]](themes/cpgnuke/images/plus.gif) Since MV has not fixed his profile, and won't connect as his son to his computer. I'm taking over Oniji until further notice.
Oniji, the Monk stands and bows deeply to the Emperor, "It is a great honor to offer a blessing." The Monk closes his eyes and opens his arms over the table. His voice is strong and proud.
"Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Void
combine to make this food.
Numberless beings gave their lives
and labors that we may eat.
May we be nourished
that we may nourish life."
He claps his hands once and the others in the room clap their hands as well. The feast begins. For the next half an hour there is little talk beyond polite chit chat as everyone eats the meal. It is, as expected, the best food you have had in a very long time. The Emperor's Table is not a simple afair and food from all over the empire at this time is to be had. Sushi from the Crane lands, brown rice from the Scorpion lands, vegtables from the Shinomen Mori in the Phoenix lands, Oolong Tea from the Crab lands, and much much more. After sixty minutes you are filled, and delighted with the meal. Things start to come to an end, haven eaten and drank plenty, the Emperor pushes back his tray so signal the meal is over. People hurriedly finish up what they have on their chopsticks.
"It has been a must delightful afternoon, but now I must retire for the day, and offer prayers to my ancestor Lady Sun Amaterasu in thanks. Enjoy the rest of your day under her guiding light." The young Hantei stands, bows slightly to the court and is escorted off and out of the chamber by his Seppun guards."

Shiori enjoys her meal, speaking of inconsequential things during hte course of her meal to be polite. When the Emperor is finished, she sets her chopsticks down and bows her head as the Emperor takes his leave.

The Lion eats at a practiced pace, making small talk when spoken to. He thinks on his mother's sword, hoping that someday he can have it reforged once again. When the Hantei makes his departure, Ryoko bows deeply and gives the Son of Heavens the Honor due to him. His thoughts then go to the mission at hand...

Shimazu eats, but sparingly, the man never has much of an appetite. When finished, and the Emperor takes his leave, he knows it is soon time to do the same.
He smiles over to Ryoko, then Shiori, then says to the Lion, "Ryoko-san, I am tired, I believe we should try to retire soon so that we can pick up the trail of the thief early tomorrow."

It is only early afternoon right now, and the lunch feast is over. People begin to filter out, and as you do the same the Otomo, Bayushi and others stop you, offer their well wishes and good-byes. What could take only ten minutes turns into a fourty minute ordeal which thanks to Shiori's political skill you are able to navigate out of and you hurry back to the yishi, or estate, that the Emperor himself has given you for your use.
The four heroes from the future, and protectors of the Hantei find themselves back in the estate, thankfully alone among yourselfs. Matsu Ryoko's armor rests on a stand, his daisho sitting there next to it. The Lion Samurai is an equal now, and while hints of the real future remain, it makes sense to everyone that Ryoko is Matsu Ryoko.
The group is sitting around a common room in the yishi with a moment finally to themselves.

Shiori takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly when they are alone and away. She visibly relaxes a bit and opens her eyes again and faces the group. She says nothing, but her features harden again and she settles to sitting. Lost again... her features reveal nothing, but her thoughts whirl.

Shimazu sighs, seating himself on the ground with a frown. "It was not as bad as it could have been." His eyes float over to Ryoko, "I think something is different about you, something has changed." Shrugging, "We should prepare to make away and flee this place while we still can."

Oniji sits, "What has happened today is dangerous. If you continue to lie about your situation Crane-sama, then there are many problems that might arrise." The monk looks worried just what affects they will have on the future. "Already we are damaging the course of history."
There is some noise at the front of the house. You can hear muffled conversations between servants and a new arrival out in the front foyer. The door to the house is closed and soft pitter-patter of unshod feet echoes in the hall and there is a knock on the wooden frame of the rice paper door to the chamber you are in.

Shimazu nods to Oniji, "I know, that is why we must go," he says, his eyes darting to the door as their is noises outside. He frowns, standing up quickly and walking toward the paper door. He immediately pulls it open to see who is outside.
